04/11/13: Despite the slow start to the 2012-13 sled season
it actually turned out to be a GREAT season! THANK YOU to all
the groomer drivers!! Thanks to our hard working group of people
we had a successful Trail Work Day last September, Snowmobile
Safety Class in December, Chili Ride In this past January and
a nice turn out for the Club's 2nd Annual Club Ride in February.
We had lots of fun and GREAT TRAILS!!
Check this website during the off season for dates of events for
the 2013-14 season.

IMPORTANT TRAIL
INFO YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
(Posted 01/06/13):
Be aware that there is logging going
on in the Langlade County land off of the trail off the north
end of Pickerel Creek Rd. so please be aware of your surroundings,
slow down and watch for logging trucks on Pickerel Creek Rd. as
well as on the trail.
(Posted 10/11/12) Pickerel Creek Rd. Issue:
After many meetings with the Town Of Ainsworth Officials and your
Club Officers and Board Members the passage of using Pickerel
Creek Rd. has been granted with NEW STIPULATIONS:
1. There is a 25 MPH SPEED LIMIT
2. Snowmobiles are to be in SINGLE FILE ONLY
3. ALL Northbound will use the east side of the road and ALL Southbound
traffic will use the west side of the road. (Just as if you were
driving a car or truck.)
4. Pickerel Creek Rd. will not be groomed.
There is also a slight trail change through the woods getting
on/off Pickerel Creek Rd. near Hwy T so you won't have to be on
the road the entire time.
PLEASE RESPECT THESE STIPULATIONS
OR THIS PASSAGEWAY WILL BE CLOSED.
(Posted 10/11/12) Due to a sale of land you can no longer get
off/on the trail off of Pickerel Lake at Firelite Lodge. You will
still be able to get to the Firelite Lodge by TRAIL ONLY and not
via Pickerel Lake.
(Posted 11/17/2012) Due to circumstances beyond the Tombstone Pickerel
Sno
Club's control, the trail that goes up to the Mole Lake Casino
will DEAD-END at the Mole Lake Casino. This
means you will NO LONGER be able to ride from Mole Lake to Hwy
8.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Caution:
The Winter aeration
(large area of open water) on Pickerel Lake is located
on the north side of
the lake just east of the narrows. Please be advised that ice
conditions can change rapidly and beware of ice heaves.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
ATV INFORMATION:
ATVs are not
allowed on snowmobile trails until 10 days AFTER the snowmobile
trails have opened,
and when the temperature is less than 28° F.
Also, the Parrish
Highlands and Augustyn
Springs ATV trails are closed until May 2013. Citations will be

2012-13 PAST POSTS:
(04/01/13 @ 5:40PM)
All LANGLADE COUNTY SNOWMOBILE
TRAILS WILL CLOSE FOR THE SEASON TONIGHT AT 8PM.
(04/01/13 @ 7:45AM): This
past weekend gave us mixed weather. Saturday was rain then snow,
rain then snow, you get the idea. What a slushy, sloppy mess!
Sunday was cloudy in the AM and sunny in the afternoon. With the
present weather conditions, the trails may close with short notice.
We have not heard and can not find anything on when the trails
will close in Langlade County. I'll try & get a more info.
and update later.
FOREST COUNTY CLOSING WED.
04/03/13.
With the recent
rain there was standing water in some low areas. Trails are open,
conditions are poor to fair at best.
(Posted 03/29/13
@ 7:45 AM) Yesterday (Thurs.
3/28) we were up in to the mid 40's and sun. The temps at night
have been below freezing at night, but by mid afternoon with the
warm temps, the trails are softening up. Some road shoulders are
getting very thin, more blacktop at gas stations, pit stops, &
road crossings, but the trails in the woods are holding up very
nicely. NOTE: The trail known as Spider Creek (off of Lost Lake
Rd. where the loggers plowed the trail to nothing this past winter
is not recommended to ride as there is a section that is down
to absolutely nothing (it's mud). Also, there is one short section
of trail that is closed in the Deerbrook area: from I39 to
I40; also, if you are planning on riding in/from the Antigo area,
call ahead as to trail conditions, the trails in the fields are
starting to deterioate.
This could be close
to the last weekend (there is NOT a set date for trails
closing for the season, closing will be determined as conditions
warrant, this is also the case in Forest County) but trail conditions
continue to be fair to good. The best riding would be in the morning
to mid afternoon.
Forecast for today
(Fri. 3/29) is high of 46* and sun.
Sat. March 30: Rain possibly mixed with a little snow
Ride it til it melts!

From WJFW: Temps
will begin to trend downward Wednesday night as colder air filters
into the Great Lakes. This cold air could touch off a few lake
effect snow showers of the snowbelts of the Northwoods and UP
Wednesday night into Thursday, but it looks like any snow accumulations
will be on the light side. After Thursday, it looks like snow
will be hard to come by through this weekend as northwesterly
flow in the atmosphere draws in dry air from Canada. We may have
to wait until early next week for our next real threat for snow.

@ 7:50AM) We had
a good amount of traffic on Saturday and Sunday had a fair amount.
Groomers were out at night on Saturday and Sunday and will continue
to be out this week as needed at night when the temp drops. The
next few days it's going to be mild.
Hopefully we won't see to much melting and by Thursday we should
be back in to the safe zone as far as weather goes so we can squeeze
in another weekend of riding.
From WJFW: Monday
is cloudy and quiet. Mostly cloudy skies are dry and winds stay
light. Afternoon temperatures make it into the mid 30's. This
means roads could get a little wet during the day from some snow
melt. As temperatures drop below freezing for the Monday evening,
some untreated roads may have slick spots.
Tuesday is one more
day of quiet weather. A storm pushes up the Ohio River Valley
for Wednesday morning. The Northwoods has the chance to get some
light snow from this however, as of now, most of the snow will
stay in southern Wisconsin. Flurries remain in the forecast for
Wednesday with only slight chances of light snow for Thursday
and Friday.
Monday: A few flurries
linger.
Temps: 32° to 38°
Winds: Light SSW
Monday Night: Partly
cloudy.
Temps: 12° to 18°
Winds: Light E
Tuesday: Partly

Currently it is partly sunny and 23*
Tonight's low is expected to be 16*
From WJFW: Flurries
and light snow showers will stick around for the Northwoods on
Saturday with perhaps another 1" of snow by Saturday evening.
Flurries may linger through Saturday night before ending early
Sunday morning. At this point, Sunday and Monday look to be our
driest days for the next week as a weak ridge of high pressure
drifts overhead. Light snow showers return for Tuesday as our
next storm system moves into the region with light snow and flurries
lingering throughout most of next week!

From WJFW: Accumulating
Snowfall Returns Friday
***A Winter Weather
Advisory has been issued for all of northern Wisconsin through
Friday evening. Snow is expected to develop early Friday morning
with widespread snow throughout the day. Gusty, east winds may
create periods of blowing and drifting snow with 3 to 6"
of snow expected by Friday evening.***
We saw a brief break
from the snow Thursday across the Northwoods and we were even
treated with some sunshine! Clouds will thicken up Thursday night
as our next storm system moves into the region with the chance
for light snow showers developing early Friday morning. Expect
widespread snow throughout the day Friday with total snow accumulations
ranging from 3 to 6" of snow by the evening. Also give yourself
a little extra time for travel as gusty, east winds will produce
some blowing and drifting snow.
This storm system
will more or less stall out across the UP by Saturday morning
and that means light snow will stick around across the Northwoods
through Saturday evening. I don't expect any significant snow
accumulations for Saturday, but we could see another inch or so
of accumulations by Saturday evening. Sunday and early Monday
should provide us a brief reprieve from the snow before our next
storm moves into the region. This system should spread snow back
into the Northwoods by Monday evening and may keep light snow
in the forecast through out most of next week!
Friday: Snow. Accumulations
around 3-6 inches.
Temps: 24° to 30°
Winds: Breezy in AM/E 5-15 mph G20mph

@ 7:50AM) Yesterday I rode
a quick 80, started out on the TPSC trails, then to the LMT's
and 100 Miler and again all trails were fantastic! From WJFW:
Lake effect clouds and snow showers will finally depart the Northwoods
this evening leaving us with mainly clear skies for the region
tonight. Thursday looks to be the quiet before the storm as high
pressure brings us temporary sunshine in the morning, but clouds
will be on the increase through the afternoon. Winds will remain
on the lighter side as well compared to the last couple of days,
so expect tomorrow to feel a little warmer!
Our next storm system
will spread snow back into the Wisconsin Thursday night with widespread
snow across the entire state Friday morning. Travel may become
tricky at times as easterly winds pick up Friday morning which
could lead to some blowing and drifting snow. Total snow accumulations
should range from 3 to 5" of snow for the Northwoods with
slightly higher amounts towards Central Wisconsin.
Light snow will
remain in the forecast Friday night through Saturday as this storm
system slowly crawls across Wisconsin and the UP. We should catch
a brief break from the snow on Sunday, although computer models
are hinting at the possibility for a few lake flurries for the
snowbelts. Don't put away the shovels as another storm system
takes aim at the Badger state next Monday night through Wednesday
with more accumulating snow!
Currently it is
sunny and 7*

@8:20AM) The TPSC groomers
have been out and once again the trails are like concrete thanks
to the cold weather! From WJFW:Northerly winds this morning across
Lake Superior pushed clouds back in to the Northwoods this morning.
The clouds kept temperatures from falling below zero. But temperatures
into Central Wisconsin, where the clouds were fewer, dropped down
to near zero degrees, if not a degree or two below. The clouds
and winds will linger here in the Northwoods for a majority of
the day. Wind chill values this morning are in the double digits
below zero, so be sure to cover up!
Into this afternoon,
we may see some breaks of sunshine in the clouds here in the Northwoods,
with increasing sunshine as you travel south. Temperatures this
afternoon will be a little warmer than yesterday. But much like
yesterday, it will still be chilly in the wind.
Currently it is
sunny, clear and 7*
Wednesday: Decreasing
clouds, still cold.
Temps: 14° to 19°
Winds: NNW 5-15 mph
Wednesday Night:
Becoming mostly clear, cold.
Temps: 0° to -10°
Winds: NE 3-8 mph
Thursday: Mostly
sunny, clouds increasing late in the day.

Winds: Light and Variable

2 8:20AM) Not a whole lot
new to report. Currently it is 11* and light snow.
From WJFW: Lake effect snow will stick around through Tuesday
night, but it looks like it should finally wind down by Wednesday
morning as winds turn towards the west and dry air settles across
the state. Our next storm system will arrive for Thursday night
and Friday with perhaps a couple inches of snow for the Northwoods.
The good news is that temps should be back closer to average for
the weekend with flurries lingering into Saturday.
(Posted 02/17/13
@6PM)This past weekend
the trails conditions were great! On Saturday there were a lot
of sleds around at many of the area's establishments! Today we
rode with another couple and the trails were fantastic! I'm sure
last night's low of -23* had something to do with the freshly
groomed trails setting up like concrete! We were pleasantly surprised
by the amount of people who stayed and still were riding and enjoying
the beautiful day!
From WJFW: Change
comes creeping in for Sunday night. Clouds increase as a clipper
system swings through just to our north. For the Northwoods, light
snow is possible beginning early Monday morning. No major accumulations
are expected even though light snow is possible through the rest
of the day. However, as this system pushes to the east, it will
access some Gulf moisture so far eastern areas could receive a
little more than the rest of the Northwoods.
Lake effect snow
picks up for Tuesday behind this system. The cold air sticks around
for the week as highs remain 5 to 10 degrees below average. The
next chance for snow is a storm that could make its way in for
Friday night but we will have to continue to watch this one.
(Posted 02/17/13
@ 6PM) The 2013 Ladies
Overnight Ride has been cancelled.
(Posted 02/16/13
@ 11:20AM) Cold temps invaded us again last night and this morning
which in turn froze trails quite nicely!
From WJFW: Cold
will be the name of the game this weekend so be sure to dress
appropriately! Northwest winds will keep the threat for lake effect
snow for Northwoods through Saturday morning. These snow showers
should gradually come to an end by the midday Saturday as winds
begin to lighten up and turn more towards the west. Temps Saturday
night should plummet into the single digits and teens below zero
for the Northwoods, but look for the mercury to rebound back into
the lower 20's by Sunday afternoon!
Our next threat
for snow will return for Sunday night and Monday as our next storm
system moves into the region. At this point, it doesn't look like
this system will be a big snow maker for the Northwoods, but eastern
Wisconsin could see some accumulating snow by Monday evening.
Cold air will dump back into northern Wisconsin by Tuesday which
should touch off another round of lake effect snow for the Northwoods.
There could be another storm for the end of next week that could
bring widespread snow accumulations to the Badger State, but its
way to soon to talk details with that particular system.
(Posted 02/15/13
@ 8:55AM) Yesterdays new
snow totaled about 3" and temps dropped last night as predicted,
to low of -2*! Riding today and Saturday should be very good as
our groomers are out continuously. Trails set up very nicely last
night! Currently it is mostly sunny and 8*
From WJFW: Northerly
flow will draw in colder weather for the Northwoods, and even
some heavy snow off to the northwest in the Snowbelt Counties
right into the weekend. Temperatures will be noticeably cooler
today and tomorrow before a slight warm up moves in Sunday afternoon.
Lake effect snow will likely persist right into Saturday, before
slowly retreating north Saturday afternoon.
Into next week,
another storm system will be on approach from the Southwest U.S.
and also off to our west northwest in Canada. This system as of
right now has a bullseye on Michigan, but even with this storm
track we may still see snow showers as this storm conjoins over
Wisconsin. Bigger impacts will be off to the Eastern side of Wisconsin
and into Michigan. But stay tuned as storm systems like this can
shift tracks!
(Posted 02/14/13 @
7:40AM) Spent yesterday out riding and it was good to very
good! Rode to Crandon, Laona, Wabeno to Carter and back over to
Pickerel. We received about 1 1/2" of new snow overnight.
Currently it is about 27* and snowing. Total from this system
supposed to be is 1 - 3". Tonight we are supposed to drop
down to the single digits.
(Posted 02/12/13 @
8:20AM) Had a nice surprise
this morning in the form of white gold! Not snowing heavy, but
hey! it's better than nothing!
From WJFW: Lake effect flurries will linger through this evening
but will eventually come to an end across the Northwoods as winds
turn more towards the west. Tuesday & Wednesday look to be
dry, but seasonally mild for this time of the year with temps
in the upper 20's to lower 30's. Our next storm system will swing
through northern Wisconsin Wednesday night and Thursday morning
with perhaps 1-3" of fluffy snow by noon Thursday. Lake effect
snow showers return for the rest of Thursday and Thursday night
as arctic air invades once again.

had some rain, freezing rain and light snow. Currently it is 28*
and light snow. Total new snow, maybe a little over an inch. Also,
posted a couple of pictures while out in the groomer on Sat. 02/09/13,
you can check them out on the Club Pics Page.

11:30AM) Wow! What a
weekend it was! There was a lot of snowmobile traffic especially
on Saturday and it was great to see everyone enjoying themselves.
There were quite a few parents riding with their little ones in
front of them, groups of sleds ranging from 2 sleds to 25-30 sleds
in a group! I even saw riders who were behind the groomer picking
up larger sticks and a few stones until the groomer could get
over and let the sleds through! THANK YOU! You know who you are!
All three of our groomers were out Saturday beginning about 11AM
(and went all night) and as of right now there is one out finishing
up (should be done within the hour) from yesterdays heavy traffic.
So then the entire TP trail system will be all groomed!
The Pickerel EMS
would like to THANK everyone who came down to support them on
Saturday and they hope you enjoyed your breakfast!

the guys installed the new tracks on our third New Holland (no
more wheeled tractors for grooming!) and it was already out lastnight/early

7:45AM) Temps
last night dropped to -2* so trails should be in very good condition,
but please note with the Jump In today there will be HEAVY traffic.
So, not only will our groomers be out on their
regular runs late afternoon and evening but also will be out Saturday
mid day.

had the opportunity to do some riding and found all the trails
I rode were awesome! I'm sure the last week or so of below 0 temps
at night had a lot to do with it! Not only were the TP Sno Clubs
trails spectacular but also the 100 Miler, LMT's, Lily's and Red
Arrows were awesome as well!
Late yesterday afternoon/early
evening we received close to 3" of new snow!
Just a reminder
that with the Jump In this Saturday not only will our groomers
be out on their

FRONT PAGE OF ANTIGO DAILY JOURNAL
Langlade County Snowmobile Council President Dan Henningfeld calls
it liquid gold.
The heavy snows
that fell last week, and the on and off flurries predicted for
much of the next week, may have come in time to save a snowmobile
season that had been hobbled by wild swings in temperatures and
a drought of the white stuff.
Everyone is
just breathing a sign of relief, Mike McDougal of the Deerbrook
Bridge Runners Snowmobile Club, which hosted its annual Classic
Cruise this past Saturday, said. It gets pretty cold up
here in the northwoods with no recreation.
After a flirtation
with open trails in the northern sections of the county in early
January, the system closed down after a substantial thaw just
two weeks later. Northern trails reopened a week ago and the entire
system was declared good to go on Saturday.
Businesses across
the trail system saw an instant response.
It definitely
helped, Ken Mikkelson of Walleye Lodge on Rolling Stone
Lake says. We didnt have anything going before the
snow.
Mikkelson says that
his four winterized cabins largely sat empty for the early winter,
prompting him to wonder if he should just closed them down for
the season, but now that the snow has returned were
booked up pretty much into March.
Everyone is
a lot happier, he adds. They all just want to have
some fun now.
To the north, Beth
Reinemann, community director for the Pelican Lake Chamber of
Commerce, said restaurants and night spots reported their best
weekend of the season following the trail opening.
Riders have
been telling us that the trails are in very good shape right now,
Reinemann says. The Sno-Devils Snowmobile Club (based
in Elcho) is doing a great job on them.
Pelican Lake is
in Oneida County, but Langlades opening had an extremely
positive effect, she says.
Hopefully
the trails will be good for the next few weekends as well,
she adds.
Even businesses
that are not directly impacted by snowmobile riders get a bump
from the trails.
Dave Visser, who
operates Builders Service in Elcho, says the entire community
gets a boost when people are enjoying the trails and coming to
town.
You can definitely
tell when the trails are open, there is more traffic everywhere
in town, he says.
Many Langlade County
snowmobilers own cottages, Visser explains, and when the trails
are closed, they simply dont make the trip north. That has
a ripple effect across the community.
And if the
bars and restaurant owners are doing well, they turn around and
support the rest of the businesses, he says.
The last-minute
opening did create some concerns. McDougal says that numbers were
down on the Classic Cruise simply because people didnt know
the trails would be open, and made other plans, and Deena Grabowsky
of the Antigo/Langlade County Chamber of Commerce says that her
office is fielding more and more phone calls, many from out of
state, along with requests for trail maps and information on accommodations,
once the opening became official.
Were
getting mounds of phone calls now, she says. Im
happy to be able to tell people that everything is open. Its
been a long haul these last few winters but right now everyone
is happy, visitors and the locals.
Tammy Kubiaczyk,
recreation coordinator for the county, says the decision to open
or close trails is not made lightly, with the concerns of landowners
first and foremost along with the condition of the
trails and the amount of snow.
If the temperatures
stay cool and the snow stays on the trails, well be good
for a while, she says.
Hennigfeld says
that businesses across the region are becoming aware of the positive
effect snowmobilers have on businesses across the region.
Everyone is
just ecstatic right now, he says.
Snowmobile Trails
in Langlade County are developed and maintained by the Langlade
County Forestry and Recreation Department and 11 different snowmobile
clubs.
There are over 530
miles of state approved and user funded snowmobile trails.

Snow showers across
Wisconsin and the Northwoods along with high winds will lead toward
difficult travels today. Gusty winds will produce blowing snow
and whiteouts in the Northwoods. In Central, Eastern, and Southern
Wisconsin snow drifts could reach 2-4 feet. Travel will be next
to impossible south of Marshfield and east toward Green Bay from
the Northwoods.
A break down of
snow totals can be found amongst the tabs above. For the Northwoods
it looks as though a sharp cut off will occur from Medford to
the southwest stretching northeast to Land 0' Lakes. South and
east of this line could see totals from 4-7 inches with the higher
end of the range the further south and east you look. Northeast
of this line will only see about 1-4" of snow, with the higher
end of this range along the above mentioned line, and smaller
amounts the further north and west you look.
Looks like snow
will taper off starting in Central Wisconsin tonight. Lake effect
snow showers will linger for the Northwoods, and bigger totals
with lake effect snow will occur across the U.P. and the Snowbelt
Counties, namely the counties on the WI/U.P. border. Winds will
stick around overnight on the high side with gusts continuing
to reach into the upper thirty near forty mile per hour range.
Difficult travels will persist overnight and into the morning
hours for Friday, as blowing snow and whiteouts will still be
of concern in the Northwoods and across Wisconsin.
(Posted 12/17/12) There was nothing good to post about
weather-wise this past weekend. Saturday we got a little snow
and slush mix and drizzle, just enough to make things messy. On
Sunday it was above freezing so we lost a little snow.
The next snow event looks like it could possibly happen
later this week:
From WJFW in Rhinelander:
Danger on the ice
After a drizzly
weekend across Wisconsin, ice conditions have once again deteriorated
across the area. There's been a few reports of ice shacks going
through the ice so please use extreme caution if you decide to
venture out on to the lakes! Flurries will stick around through
tonight and we could see a dusting of snow tomorrow as a warm
front tries to lift northward across the state. Otherwise we'll
start out this week on a quiet note across the Northwoods!
All eyes turn to
Thursday and the potential for a big dump of snow somewhere across
Wisconsin. Computer models are still all over the place as far
as the storm track goes and that will make a big difference with
just how much snow we could see! Right now, it looks like this
system could bring heavy snow across Central Wisconsin Thursday
with strong, north winds for all of northern Wisconsin. We should
see some snow across the Northwoods, but we'll be skirting the
line between heavy snow and no snow at all!
If you have any
travel plans, give yourself plenty of time on Thursday as we'll
also see blowing and drifting snow. Temps take a tumble Friday
and should help to crank up the lake effect snow machine of of
Lake Superior. The snowbelts of northern Wisconsin and the UP
should see additional snow accumulations through Friday with snow
ending across Central Wisconsin. Temps will remain below average
through early next week, but no bitterly cold air is on tap through
the next 7 days.
Looking for some
snow!

With our fundraising events and donations, the Tombstone-Pickerel
Club maintains a status of being an integral part of our community.
In the past we have given donations to the Fire & Rescue squad
to aid them in updating their equipment such as a defibrillator
and a 6 wheel drive rescue unit which is capable of getting to
an accident victim on the trails. We also allow other community
organizations to use our club house facilities for their special
events. Our club also conducts a yearly safety education class
for snowmobiling.
The Pickerel area looks forward to having you spend
time here!!!
